We will have a fundraising stall with a full selection of merchandise (t-shirts, polo shirts and hoodies) and commemorative badges.

We are delighted to be able to say that the call for design ideas for the memorial has been very successful and we now have a range of artists who have indicated their interest and their initial ideas. These are artists working in sandstone, iron and glass and many of them have a clear track record of delivering on public realm artwork.
The committee now have the difficult task of whittling down the entries to 6 artists who we will then invite to come and talk to us. That should take about 3-4 weeks. Thereafter, we will commission 3 of them to produce a fully costed and modelled proposal with a detailed plan for delivery.
This is a very important stage in the project and the first time we have actually been able to look at the ideas of interested artists. More information to follow over the next month and more details of the fundraising efforts which are running in parallel will be available on this site over the next few weeks.
We Are Building it!
The details of a design competition which will produce a design for a permanent memorial to An Gorta Mór in Glasgow has been lodged with Creative Scotland today. Subject to any discussions with Creative Scotland the competition brief will be as outlined here Project Brief for Memorial to An Gorta Mór January 2018
The schedule for the competition is as follows:
The initial stage of the competition will run from 8th January 2018 to 16th February 2018. Artists will be expected to provide the following:
- a statement of intent with regards approach to the commission and engagement with the community. (A4 max
- Some photographs of previous work (up to 12 photographic images or digital images on a CD)
- A CV which should provide evidence of the ability to bring the project to completion
These should be delivered by post or hand to St Mary’s RC Church, 89 Abercromby Street, Glasgow G40 2DQ by 4pm on 16th February 2018. If the item is too large to be posted through a letterbox then please contact us in advance to arrange acceptance.
- From these applications a short list of 6 will be invited to interview to present their approach to the brief concept and community engagement
- From these interviews, three will be chosen. The chosen three artists will be asked to produce a fully specified and costed monument design, a model of the design, and full details of timescale and all necessary instructions and details regarding groundworks and installation. The models produced will be owned by the Committee.
- The payment for this work will be £2000 each. The designs and other materials specified must be delivered by 27th April 2018
- The winning design will be announced at a gala fundraising event in May/June (the precise date to be arranged.

Today members of the committee met with two senior academics from the Glasgow School of Art in what was a very informative and productive meeting. We discussed the scope of the project, the detail of how the design competition might be structured, ways in which we could involve the community in selecting between the designs and some resources which would help to guide us through the commissioning process.
The Dr Alastair Payne, Head of the School of Fine Art and his colleague, Dr Gina Wall, who is Deputy Head, very generously gave their time to give us the initial guidance that we needed.
The next step in the process if for a further meeting to be held with experts in the field of sculpture and environmental art who will be able to assist us further in designing the competition in detail. Dr Payne kindly offered to facilitate this meeting and we hope to be able to do that very soon.
We are very pleased to be moving forward after such long delays into what will be a very exciting stage.

With the announcement yesterday in the Irish Voice of the site for the planned memorial (see links below), the project now moves into a new and exciting phase. The first priority is to get the design commission brief ready and out to interested artists and sculptors. We are seeking the required technical advice now and, as soon as we have that, we are good to go. The funds are in place and the site specifications are available so we do not anticipate any significant delay.

Thank you all for your patience but after more than two years of working away in the background to find a suitable site for a permanent memorial in Glasgow to An Gorta Mór, we are very pleased to say that the Irish Voice on Wednesday of this week (20/9/17) will carry the good news that a site has been chosen. This breakthrough in a two year logjam means that we can now press ahead with the long-awaited design competition and the programme of fundraising and educationals which we have been unable to progress in the absence of a site.
We were happy to give our friends in the Irish Voice this ‘exclusive’ and we hope many of you will snap up the print copy as a nice souvenir as well as get online early on Wednesday to find out the news.
After Wednesday’s announcement there will be nothing between us and a permanent and fitting memorial except a lot of fundraising and hard work. We are up for it and we know you are too!
Just a quick update to let you all know that we are still waiting on permission for a site we are looking at. This is holding up the whole project as we cannot proceed with the design competition until we can tell the artists the site for the memorial. We have genuine hope that this will be resolved very soon so please be patient and we will be back with you as soon as we can.

Apologies to everyone who has been waiting patiently for news of the plans for the long-awaited memorial to the Irish Famine. The choice of site is what has been holding us up as we cannot launch the design competition until we are able to tell the artists where the memorial will be sited.
Welcome to our new site everyone. The launch of the site will give us a platform to keep everyone updated with developments in the project as it goes along.
In terms of where we are now. We completed the initial stage of the fundraising before the summer which allows us to proceed with the design competition. The design competition will give us a range of designs from which to choose a suitable, permanent memorial to An Gorta Mór in Glasgow. We are engaging with the Glasgow School of Art and hope to launch the competition over the next month or so. The main cause of the delay at the moment is the selection of a suitable site but work is progressing on that.
The selection of the prize-winning bid will take place at social event which will combine a celebration of the artist’s work and also a further fundraising opportunity. More on that later.
Once we have a design and we know the total cost we will move into the serious fund-raising stage. That stage will take as long as it takes and we have not put a date on it. It is important after all this time that Glasgow has a fitting and permanent memorial and that is the top priority of the Committee’s work.
In the meantime, if you want to become more involved with the Committee then please contact us. Also if you are able to organise a local fundraising event then please let us know and we will work with you on it by providing a speaker if desired and/or by advertising it on our website and social media.
We hope that this will also be an educational project and we will post details of resources of interest on our Resources page as we go along. As well as this, we hope to organise public meetings with speakers who are experts on the cataclysmic events which led many of our ancestors to this city. So watch out for those.
We have a range of merchandise which can be purchased from our shop page. Orders will take two weeks or more because we order them in a regular cycle. If demand increases then we will look at this again. All profits from the merchandise will go the memorial fund.
